November in Freetown
There are three main ways to get from Lungi Airport to
Freetown. You can go by Paramount helicopter, or the more leisurely
ferry. This time I took the ferry. It was a much more interesting
trip, but it does take longer. Maybe 3-4 hours longer . . .
This is the ferry we missed - by 3 minutes - on its way
to the Freetown peninsula . . .
Almost $3m a day spent by UNAMSIL. Here is where
it is going: UN speed boats.
Finally - the next ferry!

Emptying - then loading the ferry. Its an old greek ferry, but I couldn't find the original name.
The ferry was only half the trip, the evening traffic
on lively Kissy Road was damn impressive. It took us an hour to go
three blocks . . .
Binta in front of her bar.
Of course the first place to go when you reach Freetown is Binta's Sundowner Beach Bar on Lumley Beach Road. Binta asked me to put this on my web page - she wants the advertising. Many of her clients didn't want it advertised - its the best bar in Sierra Leone but we'd hate to have to wait for seating . . .
A note of historical interest - the bar is located very
close to the spot where the Americans staged their evacuation during the
coup in 1997.
Binta asked that a larger picture be added of her new
"Sundowner" sign . . .
